These are friendly, reliable and perfect for kids and grannies. Unfortunately they also have little connection with real Chinese food
: this is safe, made-for-the-West stuff. Although its website claims "We launched the New Rendevous in 1985 with the vision of introducing the North East to the real taste of the Orient", the reality is bland Anglo-Chinese fare. Having almost fallen asleep with food that was less interesting than the pre-prepared takeaways in Marks and Spencer, I tried the chicken thai green curry. It was neither fresh, thai nor green - I sent it back and, judging by the waiter's shrugged shoulders, I wasn't the first.
